What is Osteopathy:

Osteopathy was established by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1874. His visionary movement away from the severly inappropriate orthodox medical profession of his time grew rapidly with increasing numbers of followers. Today, osteopaths continue to follow Dr Still's precepts:-
  1. Structure governs function and vice versa.
  2. The body is an interconnected and self maintaining unit.
  3. The body will naturally strive for self correction i.e. homeostasis.

Osteopathic & Cranial adjustments treat the whole body via the spine, joints, muscles, ligaments, connective tissue (fascia) and cranial system to restore health.

Registered Osteopaths treat more than 7 million people each year in the UK, making the profession a major provider of primary healthcare.

The World Health Organisation recognises the Osteopathic concept of somatic (bodily) dysfunction, as being scientifically proven. The British Medical Association recognises Osteopathy as a discrete medical discipline.

In the UK Osteopaths are statutorily registered practitioners, who have trained in anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical diagnosis and Osteopathic technique. They are also trained to carry out standard medical examinations of the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems, and will recognise conditions that require medical referral.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial Osteopathy was developed by Dr Willian Garner Sutherland (who was a student of Dr A T Still), it utilises the cranial rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid, which influences the entire body. It is a gentle and non invasive form of treatment that is achieved through subtle manipulation at the cranium (skull) or peripheral parts of the body.

Cranial Osteopathy is renowned for its treatment of colic and infant sleep problems. It is also effective in the treatment of a broad spectrum of other conditions, ranging from migranes, through to unresolved low-back pain.

Another commonly used technique in Cranial Osteopathy is Balanced Ligamentous Tesion (or Ligamentous Articular Release) which is extremely useful in treating  joint pain and dysfunction.
